As An Expectant Parent Considering Adoption, You Have The Right To:

  • Review different adoptive parents’ family profiles.
  • Choose the parents who may adopt your child. You’ll know their names, religion, family life, hobbies, etc., and even meet them if you would like.
  • Make a written open adoption agreement that allows you to share pictures and letters (and possibly allow you to visit with your child and the adoptive family) after the adoption. (This is a moral agreement and cannot be enforced under current Louisiana law.)
  • Name your child on his or her first (original) birth certificate. (The name can be changed by the adoptive parents on the second (revised) birth certificate issued after the adoption is finalized.)
  • Receive counseling.
  • Receive financial help with certain reasonable pregnancy-related expenses.
  • See or not see your child before you place him or her for adoption.
  • Have all Louisiana adoption laws fully explained to you.
  • Change your mind about adoption at any time before completing a consent or surrender for adoption (legal documents giving permanent consent to adoption).
  • Receive a copy of all legal documents signed.
